Students can be hesitant about asking the teacher for help when they encounter academic difficulties and can be reluctant to help each other. Through questionnaires and discussions, I sought to understand what my seminar students’ beliefs and attitudes are towards help-seeking and help-giving in a situation where they are developing their graduation thesis research projects. I tried to understand how the students’ views compared with my own about what our responsibilities are and I sought to comprehend how a lack of engagement in learning is related to feelings of inadequacy regarding academic competence as reflected in help-seeking/giving behaviours.
