Abstract
Abstract
This presentation describes a self-directed learning unit for a required English course taken by non-English majors at a Japanese university. The unit developers aimed to challenge the assumption that self-directed learning is a luxury, optional add-on for motivated learners by placing the unit right at the heart of the compulsory curriculum. The unit requires students to consider their learning goals and explore various language learning techniques and resources, then plan and reflect on their learning with minimal teacher supervision. The presenters will outline the challenges experienced implementing the unit and give recommendations for colleagues interested in adopting a similar approach.
