This presentation describes how tandem partners learned efficiently in eTandem using strategies. Data were collected through an open questionnaire to 17 participants at the end of a six-week Japanese–German eTandem project. To understand the learners' experiences in eTandem, interviews were conducted with two Japanese learners of German who autonomously continued eTandem after the project. Narratives were constructed and compared to Otto's typology (Otto, 2003). The findings gave us a better understanding on strategies in tandem learning and suggest that participants use so-called proceduralized strategies as well as declarative strategies.
