Short paper (30 minutes)
Ivan Lombardi (University of Fukui); Christopher Hennessy (University of Fukui)
How can we foster autonomy in English language learning for university freshmen who want to study in English, but have little experience in directing their own learning? The presenters piloted a credit-bearing self-directed learning English class at a Japanese national university in 2016 and 2017, and will show examples of course materials and logistics. In addition, through collected written and oral feedback, the presenters will share student 'voices' reflecting on their journey to language learning autonomy. Finally, they will show and comment on student-generated materials and other future directions for the course.
