Abstract
Abstract
Community outreach projects in which university students provide English support for international needs in small towns benefit both the students and the local community. This presentation will discuss case study research that shows how community outreach projects supportingĀ international tourism and events in a small Japanese port town helped students develop cross-cultural understanding and critical thinking skills as they used English in unscripted situations with people from around the world. Because opportunities to use English outside the classroom are limited in many Asian countries, a discussion of these projects and this research has potential for application across the region.
