Autonomous learners imbued with metacognitive understanding of the language learning process and intrinsic dedication to studying the target language may be the stuff of teachers’ dreams and educational white papers; they are not often the reality of Japanese university classrooms. This presentation outlines the process of developing a pragmatic two-tiered approach suited to the realities of Japanese universities. By incorporating the perspectives of administrators, teachers, and students we hope to highlight the core factors which have led to the success of this program, thereby enabling teachers to replicate those features which may be of use in their unique teaching environments."
